How to Learn Piano by Yourself, Step by Step
You can learn piano by yourself if you have a clear order and some way to check your playing. Self-taught players who stick with it usually start with chords, because chords let you play real music in the first week.

- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
Step 1: the map of the keys
Find C (left of the two black keys) in every octave and name the white keys up to the next C. Ten minutes, and the keyboard stops looking random.
Step 2: four chords
Learn C, G, Am and F. With these four, in different orders, you can accompany a large share of pop music. Play each chord, then switch between two of them slowly.
Practise it in a game
ChordRunner shows a chord name, you play it on a MIDI keyboard, a piano or a guitar through the microphone, and the game checks every note. Levels start with the chords on this page.
Play the demoStep 3: feedback instead of a teacher
The hard part of self-teaching is knowing if you are right. Use a tool that checks you: a MIDI keyboard with a game that reads every note, or a microphone that listens to your piano. Record yourself once a week and listen back.
Step 4: a little every day
- 10 to 20 minutes a day beats 2 hours on Sunday.
- Start with what you know, end with something new.
- One new chord or one new pattern per week is enough.
- Add reading music later, when you want it.
When to get help
If your wrists or shoulders hurt, take one lesson for posture. Good habits early save months later.
Common questions
Can you really learn piano by yourself?
Yes, many people do. A clear order (keys, then chords, then patterns), daily practice and something that checks your notes make the difference.
What should a self-taught pianist learn first?
The names of the keys, then four chords: C, G, Am and F. Then switch between them in time.
Can I check my chords with a MIDI keyboard or a microphone?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and a piano or guitar works through the microphone. The game shows a chord name and checks the notes you play.
Is everything in the demo?
The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
