Learn Piano for Kids: The First Four Weeks at Home

Kids learn piano fastest with short, regular sessions and one new idea at a time. Here is a simple plan for the first four weeks at home, ten minutes a day.

  • MIDI keyboard
  • Digital or acoustic piano
  • Guitar
  • Computer, phone or tablet

Week 1: sit, find C, name the keys

  • Bench height: forearms level with the keys, feet flat or on a box.
  • Find every C: left of the two black keys.
  • Name the white keys from C up to the next C.

Week 2: one note at a time

Play single notes the parent calls out, in any octave. A game helps: in ChordRunner there is a mode where one note appears at a time and the child finds it on the keys.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.

Week 3: the first chord

Thumb, middle finger and little finger on C, E and G. Press them together, lift, press again. Then F (F, A, C) and G (G, B, D), the same shape.

Week 4: change chords

Switch C, F, G, C slowly, four beats each. When it feels easy, try the first chord level of the game: the chord names arrive one after another and the child plays them.

What makes it stick

Ten minutes every day beats an hour on Saturday. Finish while it is still fun, and let the child show you what they learned: teaching it back is great practice.

Common questions

How can kids learn piano at home?

With a keyboard, ten minutes a day and one idea per week: note names, single notes, the first chords, then changing chords.

Is an online game enough to learn piano?

A game is great for practice and motivation. For posture and reading music, a teacher or a method book is still the best partner.

What does my child need to play ChordRunner?

A browser (Chrome or Edge) on a computer, tablet or phone, plus a USB MIDI keyboard, or a piano or guitar the microphone can hear. The on-screen keys let you try it first.

Is everything in the demo?
