Music Theory for Kids: Five Steps on the Keyboard
Music theory for kids works best when they can see it. A keyboard is perfect: the pattern of white and black keys shows almost everything a child needs to know about notes and chords.

- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
Step 1: seven letters
Music uses seven note names: C D E F G A B, then C again. Find C on the keyboard: it is the white key just left of each group of two black keys.
Step 2: the same note, higher or lower
Every C sounds like C, only higher or lower. The distance from one C to the next is an octave. Ask your child to find all the Cs on the keyboard.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoStep 3: the black keys
A black key is the note next to a white one, a little higher (sharp, #) or a little lower (flat, b). The black key between C and D is C# or Db: two names, one key.
Step 4: happy and sad
Play C, E, G together: major, it sounds happy. Play C, Eb, G: minor, it sounds sad. One key moved, a different feeling. This is the first big idea of harmony.
Step 5: chords have names
A chord name tells you which keys to play: C means C, E, G; Am means A, C, E. Reading these names fast is a skill, and a game is a fun way to train it: in ChordRunner the name appears and the child plays it.
Common questions
How do you teach music theory to kids?
On a keyboard, one idea at a time: note names, octaves, black keys, major and minor, then chord names. Short sessions and lots of playing.
At what age can kids learn music theory?
Note names and high/low can start very early. Reading chord names fast, as in ChordRunner, suits children who read letters easily, usually from about 8.
What does my child need to play ChordRunner?
A browser (Chrome or Edge) on a computer, tablet or phone, plus a USB MIDI keyboard, or a piano or guitar the microphone can hear. The on-screen keys let you try it first.
Is everything in the demo?
