The Best Piano Games Make You Play Real Keys

Search for the best piano games and most lists mix two very different things: games you tap on a phone screen and games you play on a real keyboard. Only the second kind teaches your hands. Here is how to tell them apart, and where ChordRunner, our chord game, fits.

No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.

  • MIDI keyboard
  • Digital or acoustic piano
  • Guitar
  • Computer, phone or tablet

Four kinds of piano games

  • Tile tapping: fun and fast, but your fingers learn glass, not keys.
  • Falling notes: you follow coloured bars on a real keyboard; good for one song at a time.
  • Note and reading games: a note or a staff appears and you find it on the keys.
  • Chord games: a chord name appears and you play all its notes together, so you learn the shapes behind most music.

A 5-point checklist

  • Does it listen to a real instrument, through MIDI or a microphone?
  • Does it tell you at once when a note is wrong?
  • Does it start easy and grow with you?
  • Can you practise only what you need, in any key?
  • Would you still open it after a week?

Where ChordRunner fits

ChordRunner is a chord game. A chord appears, you play it on a USB MIDI keyboard or on a piano near the microphone, and your runner jumps if every note was right. It also has single notes in any octave, sight reading on a real staff and ear training, so one game covers the main skills a beginner needs.

What it does not do

It is not a song course and has no video lessons. If your goal is one particular piece, pair it with sheet music; use the game for the chords and the reading that every piece is made of.

The levels in ChordRunner

  • Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
  • Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
  • Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
  • Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.

Common questions

What are the best piano games for learning?

The ones you play on real keys and that check every note: chord games, note-reading games and falling-note games with a MIDI keyboard. Tile-tapping games are fun but do not train your hands.

Do piano games really help you learn?

Yes, when they give instant feedback on a real instrument. A game makes you repeat the same shape many times in random order, which is how a shape becomes a reflex.

Do I need a MIDI keyboard?

It is the most precise option, but a piano or digital piano near the microphone works too. The game runs in Chrome or Edge.

Which instruments work?

A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.

How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?

Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.

Is this an independent ranking?

No. ChordRunner is our game, so this page tells you what to look for and what ChordRunner does and does not do. Use the checklist on any option you try.

Is everything in the demo?

The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
