The Difference Between Chord and Harmony, Simply Explained
The difference between chord and harmony is simple. A chord is one group of notes played together at one moment. Harmony is the bigger picture: how notes sound together and how chords follow each other through a piece.

A chord is a snapshot
Am is a chord: A, C and E at the same time. Take a photo of the music at any instant and you see one chord.
Harmony is the film
Play Am, then F, then C, then G. Each one is a chord; the way they follow each other, and the feeling of moving and coming home, is harmony. Change the order and the harmony changes, even with the same four chords.
Practise it in a game
ChordRunner shows a chord name, you play it on a MIDI keyboard, a piano or a guitar through the microphone, and the game checks every note. Levels start with the chords on this page.
Play the demoHarmony is also melody plus chord
Sing or play a melody note over a chord and they create harmony too. Over C, the note E blends; the note F rubs a bit and wants to move down to E. Hearing that pull is the start of an ear for harmony.
Learning harmony by yourself
- First: know the main chords by name (major and minor).
- Then: play common chord orders and listen to how they move.
- Then: notice which chords feel like home and which feel restless.
- Practise all of it on an instrument, not only on paper.
Common questions
Is a chord the same as harmony?
No. A chord is one set of notes at one moment. Harmony is how notes and chords sound together and move over time.
How can I learn harmony on my own?
Learn the main chords by name, play them in common orders and listen to how they move. Short daily practice on an instrument works best.
Can I check my chords with a MIDI keyboard or a microphone?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and a piano or guitar works through the microphone. The game shows a chord name and checks the notes you play.
Is everything in the demo?
The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
