A Guitar Practice Game for Your Daily Chord Practice
A guitar practice game turns the boring part of practice, repeating chord changes, into a run you want to beat. Strum each chord that appears into the microphone, acoustic or electric, and the game keeps score.
No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
A 10-minute session
- 2 minutes in practice mode: no lives, the chord notes are shown.
- 5 minutes in a level that matches you, chords in random order.
- 3 minutes of speed run: faster every minute, a new key every 5 chords.
Why a game beats a metronome alone
A metronome keeps time but never tells you a chord was wrong. The game checks every chord, so mistakes do not become habits, and the score tells you when you really improved.
A Guitar Practice Game for Your Daily Chord Practice
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoElectric or acoustic
Both work through the microphone. With an electric guitar, play through an amp or headphones out loud enough for the microphone to hear the chord.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
How long should a guitar practice session be?
Ten minutes a day is enough when it is focused: a warm-up, a level at your pace and a short speed round.
Does it work with an electric guitar?
Yes, as long as the microphone can hear it: play through an amp or a speaker at a moderate volume.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
Can I practise only the chords I need?
Yes. You can pick your own chord types or stay inside one key (advanced features in ChordRunner Premium). A MIDI keyboard works too.
