Keyboard Games for Kids With a Real MIDI Keyboard
A music keyboard at home is the start of many good keyboard games for kids. Connect it to a computer or tablet with a USB cable, open ChordRunner in the browser, and the game reacts to every key your child presses.
No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
Setting it up in two minutes
- Use a keyboard with a USB port (it says USB MIDI or USB to Host).
- Connect it to a computer, tablet or phone with the right cable.
- Open the game in Chrome or Edge: the keyboard is detected automatically.
- Press a key and check that the game reacts.
Which keyboard is good for a child
61 keys are enough for years. Full-size keys matter more than the number of sounds, and touch-sensitive keys (louder when you press harder) teach real piano touch. A toy keyboard with tiny keys trains different hand shapes. If you also want headphones for quiet practice, check that the keyboard has a headphone jack.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoNo USB port?
If the keyboard has speakers but no USB, the microphone can listen instead, as it does with an acoustic piano. Keep the room quiet and the volume clear.
First games to try
Start with one note at a time: find C, then D, then E, in any octave. Then move to the first chord level with C, F and G major. The practice mode shows the notes, so nobody gets stuck.
Common questions
What keyboard games can kids play with a MIDI keyboard?
Any browser game that supports Web MIDI. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard by itself and checks every note and chord the child plays.
Does my child need a big keyboard?
No. 61 full-size keys are plenty. Touch-sensitive keys are a plus, weighted keys can wait.
What does my child need to play ChordRunner?
A browser (Chrome or Edge) on a computer, tablet or phone, plus a USB MIDI keyboard, or a piano or guitar the microphone can hear. The on-screen keys let you try it first.
