How to Make Piano Chords Sound Better: Five Easy Fixes

How to make piano chords sound better? If your chords sound flat or clunky, the notes are usually fine; the way they are placed is not. These five easy fixes make simple chords sound like real playing.

1. Put the root in the left hand

Play only the root note low with the left hand and the chord with the right. C in the bass, C, E, G above. Instantly fuller.

C: bass C + chord C C E G

2. Move the hand less

Jumping from root position to root position sounds choppy. Going from C to F, keep the C and move only the other two notes: C, E, G becomes C, F, A. Shared notes stay, the change sounds smooth.

Practise it in a game

ChordRunner shows a chord name, you play it on a MIDI keyboard, a piano or a guitar through the microphone, and the game checks every note. Levels start with the chords on this page.

3. Spread the notes

Three notes squeezed together can sound muddy, especially low on the keyboard. Keep chords around middle C or above, and keep big gaps in the bass.

4. Play softer

Pressing every key hard makes chords harsh. Play the bass a bit louder and the chord a bit softer: it gives depth.

5. Add rhythm

  • Bass on beat 1, chord on beats 2, 3 and 4.
  • Broken chord: bass, then the chord notes one by one.
  • Repeat the chord in short, even beats for pop.

Common questions

Why do my piano chords sound bad?

Usually because every chord is played in the same position, too low, too hard, or without a bass note. Root in the left hand and smoother changes fix most of it.

How do you make chords sound fuller?

Add the root low in the left hand, spread the right-hand notes, and keep a steady rhythm.

Can I check my chords with a MIDI keyboard or a microphone?

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and a piano or guitar works through the microphone. The game shows a chord name and checks the notes you play.

Is everything in the demo?

The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
