How to read a piano chord chart
The chord symbol tells you two things: the root (the letter, like C or F#) and the type (the rest, like m7 or maj9). The formula numbers count steps of the root's major scale: 1 is the root, 3 the third, 5 the fifth, and a flat (b) lowers that note by one key.
- Root position: the chart lists the notes from the root up. Any order of the same notes is still the chord; changing the lowest note gives an inversion.
- Correct spelling: every chord tone keeps its own letter, so you will see names like Bbb (Ebm7b5) or C## (F#aug). On the keyboard Bbb is the A key and C## is the D key; the spelling just shows which degree of the chord the note is.
- Big chords: 11th and 13th chords are shown as full stacks. Pianists usually leave out notes such as the 5th and, on 13th chords, the 11th, and spread the rest over two hands: see the piano chord finder for jazz voicings of the same chords.
Which chords to learn first
- Major and minor triads in all 12 keys: most songs are built from them. Start with major chords, then minor chords.
- Seventh chords: dominant 7th, major 7th and minor 7th, the colours of pop, soul and jazz (dominant 7th chords).
- Sus, 6th and add9: small changes to a triad that open up the sound.
- Diminished and half-diminished: the tension chords that lead somewhere.
- 9ths, 11ths and 13ths: jazz colour, once the sevenths are automatic (extended chords).
A chart tells you where the notes are. Knowing them by reflex, so your hand moves before you think, only comes from playing them, many times, in a mixed order.

Any voicing counts
Root position, inversions, open voicings: if the right notes are there, the chord counts.

Plug in a USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or play an acoustic piano or guitar into the microphone.
Common questions
How do I read a piano chord chart?
Find the chord symbol: the letter is the root, the rest is the type (m7, maj9, sus4...). The chart lists the notes from the root up. The formula shows which notes of the root major scale to stack: 1 3 5 is a major triad, 1 b3 5 b7 a minor 7th.
How many chords are there on the piano?
Every chord type exists in all 12 keys. This chart shows 24 common types, 288 chords, from triads to 13ths. Inversions, altered jazz chords and slash chords add many more, but they are all built from the same formulas.
What chords should I learn first on piano?
Major and minor triads in all 12 keys, because most songs are built from them. Then the three main seventh chords (dominant, major and minor 7th), then sus, 6th and diminished chords, and the 9ths and 13ths last.
Why does the chart write Bbb or C##?
Each chord tone keeps its own letter, so the spelling shows its role in the chord. In Ebm7b5 the flat fifth of Eb is Bbb, which you play on the A key. In F#aug the sharp fifth is C##, the D key.
How do I memorise piano chords?
Play them, in mixed order, with instant feedback. In ChordRunner a chord appears on screen and you play it on a MIDI keyboard or into your microphone before it reaches you, so recall becomes automatic. Any voicing of the right notes counts.
