B7 in keys and progressions

  • B7 is the V7 chord of E major and of E minor: it pulls into E / Em.
  • In a ii-V-I in E major it is the middle chord: F#m7 → B7 → Emaj7.
  • Between D# and A there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. F7 has the same two notes, so it can replace B7 (tritone substitution).

ii-V-I: F#m7 → B7 → Emaj7 · B

B7 inversions on the keyboard

In the 3rd inversion A is the lowest note: the seventh in the bass.

A 5-minute B7 routine

  1. Play B, D#, F#, A slowly in root position and say "B7" each time.
  2. Climb the four positions: B D# F# A, then D# F# A B, F# A B D# and A B D# F#, and back down.
  3. Loop F#m7 → B7 → Emaj7 until the change into and out of B7 is clean.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

Short daily rounds fix B7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.

How to play B7 on the piano

Right hand1 (thumb)235 (little)

Too much stretch? Play B alone in the left hand and D# F# A in the right.

A three-note B7

B7 B D# A

The fifth (F#) adds little colour. B D# A is enough to sound like B7 and is far easier to reach.

Common questions

What is the difference between B7 and B?

B7 adds one note to the B triad: A, the minor seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.

What are the inversions of B7?

Root position B D# F# A, 1st inversion D# F# A B, 2nd inversion F# A B D# and 3rd inversion A B D# F#. Every position is still B7.

Where does B7 go?

B7 is the V7 chord of E major and of E minor: it pulls into E / Em. In a ii-V-I in E major it is the middle chord: F#m7 → B7 → Emaj7.

Can I practise B7 with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. B7 counts in any inversion, as long as B, D#, F#, A sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
