What age to start

Many children start between 5 and 7, when they can sit still for ten minutes and their fingers press keys one by one. Earlier is fine for playful music classes; later is fine too, older beginners often learn faster. What matters most is that the child wants to play.

Keyboard or piano?

  • A digital piano with 88 weighted keys is closest to a real piano.
  • A keyboard with 61 full-size, touch-sensitive keys is enough for the first years.
  • Avoid mini keys: they teach a different hand size.
  • A USB port lets the keyboard connect to learning apps and games.

Lessons, apps or both

A teacher fixes posture and reading early, which is hard to correct later. Apps and games are best for the daily repetition between lessons: finding notes and chords until they come without thinking.

Keeping practice going

Short sessions every day, a clear small goal, and something fun at the end. A game where the child plays the real keys, like ChordRunner with a MIDI keyboard, turns repetition into a challenge they want to repeat.

Common questions

What is the best age for a child to start piano?

Usually 5 to 7, when a child can focus for ten minutes and press keys one finger at a time. There is no upper limit.

Do kids need a real piano to start?

No. A keyboard with 61 full-size, touch-sensitive keys is enough at first; a digital piano with weighted keys can come later.

What does my child need to play ChordRunner?

A browser (Chrome or Edge) on a computer, tablet or phone, plus a USB MIDI keyboard, or a piano or guitar the microphone can hear. The on-screen keys let you try it first.
