Chord Progressions for Emotions, With Examples in C and A Minor
Chord progressions for emotions are not magic formulas, but some moves reliably push a feeling. Major chords and strong V to I endings sound bright; minor chords, borrowed chords and endings that avoid home sound sadder or more open. Here are seven moods with a progression for each.

Seven moods, seven progressions
- Happy: C F G C (I IV V I). Bright chords and a clear way home.
- Sad: Am F C G (vi IV I V). Starts on minor and never quite settles.
- Hopeful: F G Em Am (IV V iii vi). Climbs, then lands on minor with a lift.
- Nostalgic: C E7 F Fm (I III7 IV iv). The minor iv is the bittersweet moment.
- Dreamy: Cmaj7 Fmaj7 (Imaj7 IVmaj7) on repeat. Soft, unresolved colour.
- Tense: Am Bb Am Bb (i bII). A half step that will not settle.
- Epic: Am F G Am (i bVI bVII i). Big, cinematic minor.
Why they sound that way
Our ear hears V to I as arrival, so progressions that use it feel resolved. Progressions that loop without it, or that borrow chords from the parallel minor like Fm in C, keep a feeling hanging. That hanging is where most emotion lives.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoChange the mood without changing chords
- Slower tempo and long chords make the same loop sadder.
- Inversions with a rising bass make it more hopeful.
- Adding 7ths and 9ths makes it softer and more dreamy.
Loop the one you like
Type any of these into ChordRunner, for example Am F C G, and it loops while you play it on a MIDI keyboard or a piano or guitar through the microphone (advanced feature in ChordRunner Premium). Try it in other keys to hear how the mood stays.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
What chord progression sounds sad?
Progressions that start on minor and avoid a strong ending, like Am F C G, or minor loops like Am F G Am. Borrowed minor chords such as Fm in C add a bittersweet touch.
What chord progression sounds happy?
Major chords with a clear V to I, like C F G C, or C G Am F at a brisk tempo.
What is the most beautiful chord progression?
Taste decides, but I IV iv I (C F Fm C) and IV V iii vi (F G Em Am) are often named, because each has one surprising chord inside a familiar key.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
Is everything in the demo?
