F Major Chord on Guitar (F)
To play F on guitar, lay the index finger across fret 1 and add the other fingers. Then strum all six strings: the notes F, A, C ring together. Here is the shape, finger by finger, plus the chords you will play next to it.

The notes inside F, string by string
| 6th string (low E) | fret 1: F |
|---|---|
| 5th string (A) | fret 3: C |
| 4th string (D) | fret 3: F |
| 3rd string (G) | fret 2: A |
| 2nd string (B) | fret 1: C |
| 1st string (high E) | fret 1: F |
From F to Fm only one thing changes: 3rd string (G): fret 2 → fret 1.
A short F routine
- Place the fingers one at a time, then strum and listen to each string.
- Take the hand off and put the whole shape back at once, ten times in a row.
- Change from F to Bb and back for a minute; then add C.
Common F problems
- For a clean F, press firmly but close to the metal fret wire.
- If a note is dead, a finger is lying on it. Curve the fingers more.
- Hurts at first? Normal. Five minutes a day toughens the fingertips in a couple of weeks.
Make F automatic
ChordRunner listens to your guitar: when F appears, strum it and your runner jumps. The game shows the chord symbol only, so you learn to find the shape yourself. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
Play the demoCommon questions
Is F easy on guitar?
It is a barre chord at fret 1, so it takes a little more strength at first. Start slowly, check that every string rings, then practise switching to Bb.
Which fingers do I use for F?
Index finger: across the strings (barre), fret 1, ring finger: 5th string (A), fret 3, little finger: 4th string (D), fret 3, middle finger: 3rd string (G), fret 2.
Can I practise F with the microphone?
Yes. ChordRunner hears an acoustic or electric guitar through the microphone, and also a USB MIDI keyboard. It shows the chord symbol F, not the diagram, and checks the notes you strum.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
