Where the name comes from
Over the bass D, F is a 3rd, G a 4th and B a 6th. The full figure is 6/4/3. The 6 is dropped because the 4 and 3 together already point to only one position.
Its favourite job
V4/3 loves to sit between I and I6. The bass goes C, D, E: tonic, then D under V4/3, then E under I6. The bass moves by step and the upper voices barely move at all. Look for it in hymns, chorales and any piece with a smooth bass line.

Make the shape automatic
On the keys a 4/3 has two notes only a step apart in the middle: F and G in V4/3 of C. That cluster is the sign you are in second inversion. Why is it written 4/3 and not 6/4/3?
Figured bass keeps only the numbers you need. 4 and 3 together describe only second inversion, so the 6 is left out.
