Games to Learn Guitar That Listen to Your Guitar
The best games to learn guitar make you play a real guitar, not tap a screen. In ChordRunner a chord appears, you strum it, the microphone hears it, and your runner jumps if it was right. It runs in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone.
No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
What a guitar learning game should do
- Listen to your real guitar, acoustic or electric.
- Show chord names, so you learn to find shapes yourself.
- Start easy and add harder chords only when you are ready.
- Give feedback on every chord, at once.
From first chords to 13ths
Levels start with major and minor chords such as G, C, D, Em and Am, then add augmented, diminished and sus chords, 7ths and 9ths, up to 11ths and 13ths. An adaptive mode brings in the next family as your hit rate goes up.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoLearn by playing, not watching
Videos show you a shape; a game makes you find it again and again, in random order, against the clock. That repetition is what turns a shape into a reflex.
Pair it with diagrams
The game shows chord symbols only. Learn the shapes from the easy guitar chords page first, then let the game test them.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
Are there games to learn guitar with a real guitar?
Yes. ChordRunner hears an acoustic or electric guitar through the microphone: a chord appears, you strum it, and the game tells you at once if it was right.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone. A USB MIDI keyboard works too if you also play piano.
Is it good for beginners?
Yes. The first levels use only the open major and minor chords; harder chords arrive as you improve.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
Is everything in the demo?
The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
