Keyboard Practice Games for Beginners

Keyboard practice games for beginners work best when the keyboard is the controller. Plug in any USB MIDI keyboard, or play a piano near the microphone: a chord appears, you play it, and the game reacts at once.

No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.

  • MIDI keyboard
  • Digital or acoustic piano
  • Guitar
  • Computer, phone or tablet

Start with three chords

The first level uses major and minor chords on white keys: C, F, G, Am, Dm and Em. Then the black keys come in, then augmented and diminished chords, in all 12 keys.

Why a game works for beginners

  • Every chord gets checked, so you never practise a mistake.
  • Short runs fit a busy day.
  • A score shows progress you can actually see.
  • Practice mode shows the chord notes while you learn them.

Any keyboard

A 25-key mini keyboard is enough to start; 49 or 61 keys give room for both hands. A digital or acoustic piano works through the microphone.

The levels in ChordRunner

  • Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
  • Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
  • Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
  • Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.

Common questions

What is a good keyboard practice game for beginners?

One that listens to your real keyboard. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically and starts with easy major and minor chords.

Do I need a big keyboard?

No. A small USB MIDI keyboard is enough to start; a piano works through the microphone.

Which instruments work?

A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.

How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?

Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.

Can children use it?

Yes, if they can read chord names like C or Am; the practice mode with chord notes on screen helps younger players.

How long until I see progress?

With ten minutes a day, the first chords become automatic in about two weeks, and the score shows it.
