Learn Guitar Online With Something That Listens
Most people who learn guitar online watch a lot and play a little. Videos are great for seeing a shape, but they never hear you. Add one tool that listens to your guitar and tells you when a chord is not clean, and online learning starts to work.
No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
Watching versus playing
A video shows one shape, played well, by someone else. Your hands learn only when they find that shape again and again, at speed, with something telling them yes or no. Watch once, then play it twenty times.
The best microphone setup
- The built-in microphone of a laptop, tablet or phone is enough.
- Sit about an arm’s length away, guitar facing the device.
- Tune first: the game hears real pitches.
- Turn off music, fans and TV in the room.
- Electric guitar: through an amp or a speaker, not unplugged.
Learn Guitar Online With Something That Listens
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoWhat the game checks
ChordRunner shows a chord name, you strum it and your runner jumps if the microphone hears the right notes. A muted or buzzing string counts as a miss, which is exactly the feedback a video cannot give you.
A simple week
Three days learn one new shape from a chart and play it in practice mode; three days play levels with every chord you know in random order; one day rest. Repeat until the level feels easy, then move up.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
Can you learn guitar online by yourself?
Yes, if you combine videos or charts for the shapes with a tool that hears your guitar. Feedback on every chord is what turns watching into playing.
Does it work with my laptop microphone?
Yes. Sit close, tune the guitar and keep the room quiet; an electric needs an amp or a speaker.
Does the game show chord diagrams?
No, only chord names. Learn the shape from a chart, then let the game test it.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
Is everything in the demo?
The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
