Learn Piano as an Adult, Ten Minutes at a Time
It is not too late to learn piano as an adult. Adults understand music faster than children; what lags is the hands, and hands only need repetition. The trick is a plan that fits a working day and a way to practise that you look forward to.

- MIDI keyboard
- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
What adults have on their side
- You chose this, so motivation is your own.
- You understand patterns: a chord is three notes, with a rule.
- You can plan short sessions and keep them.
- You know what music you want to play.
What to expect
The most common feeling is: I know what to do, my hands do not. It is normal and it fades with repeats, not with more reading. Short daily practice beats one long weekend session, because the hands learn while you sleep between sessions.
Learn Piano as an Adult, Ten Minutes at a Time
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoA 10-minute plan
- Minute 1 to 3: find every C, then every F and G, with the right hand.
- Minute 4 to 7: play C, F, G and Am as chords, in a game with chords in random order.
- Minute 8 to 10: one short round faster than is comfortable, then stop.
Why chords first
With four chords you can play the harmony of thousands of songs, so the reward comes in weeks, not years. ChordRunner turns those chords into a run: a chord appears, you play it on a MIDI keyboard or a piano near the microphone, and the runner jumps.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
Is it too late to learn piano as an adult?
No. Adults learn the theory faster than children; the hands need regular repetition at any age. Ten focused minutes a day is enough to hear progress in a few weeks.
How long does it take an adult to learn piano?
Playing four chords with confidence takes most adults a few weeks of daily practice. Reading and both hands together take months; there is no finish line.
Can I learn without a teacher?
Yes, for notes, chords and reading, with an app that checks every note. A lesson now and then helps with posture and hand shape.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
Is everything in the demo?
