What Ab7 does in music
- Ab7 is the V7 chord of Db major and of Db minor: it pulls into Db / Dbm.
- In a ii-V-I in Db major it is the middle chord: Ebm7 → Ab7 → Dbmaj7.
- Between C and Gb there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. D7 has the same two notes, so it can replace Ab7 (tritone substitution).
Four ways to play Ab7
In the 3rd inversion Gb is the lowest note: the seventh in the bass.
Root position: Ab C Eb Gb
1st inversion: C Eb Gb Ab
2nd inversion: Eb Gb Ab C
3rd inversion: Gb Ab C Eb
A 5-minute Ab7 routine
- Play Ab, C, Eb, Gb slowly in root position and say "Ab7" each time.
- Walk up through the inversions (C Eb Gb Ab, Eb Gb Ab C, Gb Ab C Eb) without lifting the whole hand.
- Loop Ebm7 → Ab7 → Dbmaj7 until the change into and out of Ab7 is clean.
- Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.
A few minutes every day on Ab7 beat one long session a week.
Ab7 compared with the other 7th chords on Ab
Same root, same fifth: watch the third and the seventh.
Ab7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | Ab | C | Eb | Gb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Too much stretch? Play Ab alone in the left hand and C Eb Gb in the right.
Ab7 without the fifth
Drop the fifth and keep Ab C Gb: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "Ab7".

What is the difference between Ab7 and Ab?
Ab7 adds one note to the Ab triad: Gb, the minor seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.
What are the inversions of Ab7?
Root position Ab C Eb Gb, 1st inversion C Eb Gb Ab, 2nd inversion Eb Gb Ab C and 3rd inversion Gb Ab C Eb. Every position is still Ab7.
Where does Ab7 go?
Ab7 is the V7 chord of Db major and of Db minor: it pulls into Db / Dbm. In a ii-V-I in Db major it is the middle chord: Ebm7 → Ab7 → Dbmaj7.
Can I practise Ab7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Ab7 counts in any inversion, as long as Ab, C, Eb, Gb sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
