A flat minor 7th chord inversions
A seventh chord has four notes, so it has four positions. Each one is still Abm7.
Root position: Ab Cb Eb Gb
1st inversion: Cb Eb Gb Ab
2nd inversion: Eb Gb Ab Cb
3rd inversion: Gb Ab Cb Eb
Abm7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | Ab | Cb | Eb | Gb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Land all four fingers at once. If Gb is quieter, the little finger is too flat.
The light version of Abm7
Drop the fifth and keep Ab Cb Gb: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "Abm7".
How Abm7 differs from the other 7th chords on Ab
Play the four in a row and listen to each colour.
Where Abm7 goes
- Abm7 is the ii chord of Gb major, the iii of E major (as G#m7) and the vi of Cb major.
- As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Abm7 → Db7 → Gbmaj7.
- Abm7 has the same notes as Cb6 (Cb Eb Gb Ab): with Ab in the bass it is Abm7, with Cb in the bass it is Cb6.
A 5-minute Abm7 routine
- Play Ab, Cb, Eb, Gb slowly in root position and say "Abm7" each time.
- Walk up through the inversions (Cb Eb Gb Ab, Eb Gb Ab Cb, Gb Ab Cb Eb) without lifting the whole hand.
- Play it in its ii-V-I, Abm7 → Db7 → Gbmaj7, four beats per chord.
- Then mix it with chords you already know, in an order you do not choose: that is where it sticks.
Short daily rounds fix Abm7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.

Can I practise Abm7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Abm7 counts in any inversion, as long as Ab, Cb, Eb, Gb sound together.
