The light version of Abm7

Abm7 Ab Cb Gb

Drop the fifth and keep Ab Cb Gb: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "Abm7".

Where Abm7 goes

  • Abm7 is the ii chord of Gb major, the iii of E major (as G#m7) and the vi of Cb major.
  • As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Abm7 → Db7 → Gbmaj7.
  • Abm7 has the same notes as Cb6 (Cb Eb Gb Ab): with Ab in the bass it is Abm7, with Cb in the bass it is Cb6.

A 5-minute Abm7 routine

  1. Play Ab, Cb, Eb, Gb slowly in root position and say "Abm7" each time.
  2. Walk up through the inversions (Cb Eb Gb Ab, Eb Gb Ab Cb, Gb Ab Cb Eb) without lifting the whole hand.
  3. Play it in its ii-V-I, Abm7 → Db7 → Gbmaj7, four beats per chord.
  4. Then mix it with chords you already know, in an order you do not choose: that is where it sticks.

Short daily rounds fix Abm7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Abm7 counts in any inversion, as long as Ab, Cb, Eb, Gb sound together.
