C Minor 7th Chord on Piano (Cm7)
C minor 7th (Cm7) is spelled C - Eb - G - Bb. It sounds like Cm with an extra Bb, the note that gives it its soft, warm colour. Learn the shape and the inversions, then practise Cm7 by playing.

Playing Cm7 with each hand
| Hand | C | Eb | G | Bb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Land all four fingers at once. If Bb is quieter, the little finger is too flat.
The light version of Cm7
Root, third, seventh: C Eb Bb. It is the shape to learn first, and it moves smoothly to the next chord.
Learning Cm7 step by step
- Start in root position: C, Eb, G, Bb, four times, eyes on the symbol.
- Climb the four positions: C Eb G Bb, then Eb G Bb C, G Bb C Eb and Bb C Eb G, and back down.
- Play it in its ii-V-I, Cm7 → F7 → Bbmaj7, four beats per chord.
- Then mix it with chords you already know, in an order you do not choose: that is where it sticks.
Short daily rounds fix Cm7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.
How Cm7 differs from the other 7th chords on C
Same root, same fifth: watch the third and the seventh.
Four ways to play Cm7
In the 3rd inversion Bb is the lowest note: the seventh in the bass.
Root position: C Eb G Bb
1st inversion: Eb G Bb C
2nd inversion: G Bb C Eb
3rd inversion: Bb C Eb G
Where Cm7 goes
- Cm7 is the ii chord of Bb major, the iii of Ab major and the vi of Eb major.
- As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Cm7 → F7 → Bbmaj7.
- Cm7 has the same notes as Eb6 (Eb G Bb C): with C in the bass it is Cm7, with Eb in the bass it is Eb6.

What is the difference between Cm7 and Cm?
Cm7 adds one note to the Cm triad: Bb, the minor seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.
Can I play Cm7 with three notes?
Yes. Leave out the fifth and play C Eb Bb: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like Cm7 and is easier for the left hand.
Where does Cm7 go?
Cm7 is the ii chord of Bb major, the iii of Ab major and the vi of Eb major. As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Cm7 → F7 → Bbmaj7.
Can I practise Cm7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Cm7 counts in any inversion, as long as C, Eb, G, Bb sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
