F7 in keys and progressions
- F7 is the V7 chord of Bb major and of Bb minor: it pulls into Bb / Bbm.
- In a ii-V-I in Bb major it is the middle chord: Cm7 → F7 → Bbmaj7.
- Between A and Eb there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. B7 has the same two notes, so it can replace F7 (tritone substitution).
F dominant 7th chord inversions
Move F up an octave for the 1st inversion, then A for the 2nd, then C for the 3rd.
Root position: F A C Eb
1st inversion: A C Eb F
2nd inversion: C Eb F A
3rd inversion: Eb F A C
Learning F7 step by step
- Start in root position: F, A, C, Eb, four times, eyes on the symbol.
- Climb the four positions: F A C Eb, then A C Eb F, C Eb F A and Eb F A C, and back down.
- Loop Cm7 → F7 → Bbmaj7 until the change into and out of F7 is clean.
- Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.
Short daily rounds fix F7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.
How to play F7 on the piano
| Hand | F | A | C | Eb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Land all four fingers at once. If Eb is quieter, the little finger is too flat.
The light version of F7
Root, third, seventh: F A Eb. It is the shape to learn first, and it moves smoothly to the next chord.
Practise F7 by playing
ChordRunner sends F7 at you between other chords and checks every note you play. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.

How do you play F7 on the piano?
Press F, A, C, Eb together. Right hand 1, 2, 3, 5 with the thumb on F; any octave and any order of those notes is still F7.
Can I play F7 with three notes?
Yes. Leave out the fifth and play F A Eb: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like F7 and is easier for the left hand.
Where does F7 go?
F7 is the V7 chord of Bb major and of Bb minor: it pulls into Bb / Bbm. In a ii-V-I in Bb major it is the middle chord: Cm7 → F7 → Bbmaj7.
Can I practise F7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. F7 counts in any inversion, as long as F, A, C, Eb sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
