What C#m7 does in music
- C#m7 is the ii chord of B major, the iii of A major and the vi of E major.
- As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: C#m7 → F#7 → Bmaj7.
- C#m7 has the same notes as E6 (E G# B C#): with C# in the bass it is C#m7, with E in the bass it is E6.
C sharp minor 7th chord inversions
A seventh chord has four notes, so it has four positions. Each one is still C#m7.
Root position: C# E G# B
1st inversion: E G# B C#
2nd inversion: G# B C# E
3rd inversion: B C# E G#
Learning C#m7 step by step
- Start in root position: C#, E, G#, B, four times, eyes on the symbol.
- Climb the four positions: C# E G# B, then E G# B C#, G# B C# E and B C# E G#, and back down.
- Play it in its ii-V-I, C#m7 → F#7 → Bmaj7, four beats per chord.
- Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.
A few minutes every day on C#m7 beat one long session a week.
C#m7 compared with the other 7th chords on C#
One note changes and the chord gets a new name.
C#m7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | C# | E | G# | B |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Too much stretch? Play C# alone in the left hand and E G# B in the right.
C#m7 without the fifth
Root, third, seventh: C# E B. It is the shape to learn first, and it moves smoothly to the next chord.

Play the demoCommon questions
What is the difference between C#m7 and C#m?
C#m7 adds one note to the C#m triad: B, the minor seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.
Can I play C#m7 with three notes?
Yes. Leave out the fifth and play C# E B: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like C#m7 and is easier for the left hand.
Where does C#m7 go?
C#m7 is the ii chord of B major, the iii of A major and the vi of E major. As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: C#m7 → F#7 → Bmaj7.
Can I practise C#m7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. C#m7 counts in any inversion, as long as C#, E, G#, B sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
