D Augmented Chord on Piano (Daug)

To play Daug on the piano, press D, F#, A# together. Start from D and move the fifth up a semitone: that one key turns it into Daug. Below: the keyboard, the three positions, how it compares with D and Dm, and where it goes next.

What Daug does in music

  • Daug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of B minor.
  • Its thirds are equal, so Daug, F#aug and Bbaug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.
  • A common move is D → Daug → G: the raised fifth A# pushes up to B.

Common questions

How do you play Daug on the piano?

Press D, F#, A# together: right hand 1-3-5 with the thumb on D, left hand 5-3-1 with the little finger on D.

What is the difference between Daug and D?

One note. D has A on top; Daug moves it to A#. The new fifth is what gives Daug its floating, unresolved sound.

Where does Daug go?

Daug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of B minor. Its thirds are equal, so Daug, F#aug and Bbaug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.

Can I practise Daug with a MIDI keyboard or microphone?

Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically and also hears an acoustic piano through the microphone. Daug counts in any position, as long as D, F#, A# sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
