E Augmented Chord on Piano (Eaug)

To play Eaug on the piano, press E, G#, B# together. Start from E and move the fifth up a semitone: that one key turns it into Eaug. Below: the keyboard, the three positions, how it compares with E and Em, and where it goes next.

What Eaug does in music

  • Eaug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of C# minor.
  • Its thirds are equal, so Eaug, Abaug and Caug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.
  • A common move is E → Eaug → A: the raised fifth B# pushes up to C#.

Common questions

How do you play Eaug on the piano?

Press E, G#, B# together: right hand 1-3-5 with the thumb on E, left hand 5-3-1 with the little finger on E.

What is the difference between Eaug and E?

One note. E has B on top; Eaug moves it to B#. The new fifth is what gives Eaug its floating, unresolved sound.

Where does Eaug go?

Eaug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of C# minor. Its thirds are equal, so Eaug, Abaug and Caug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.

Can I practise Eaug with a MIDI keyboard or microphone?

Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically and also hears an acoustic piano through the microphone. Eaug counts in any position, as long as E, G#, B# sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
