Where Edim7 goes
- Edim7 is the vii°7 chord of F minor: it pulls up one key, Edim7 → F / Fm.
- Every note is three keys above the one before, so Edim7, Gdim7, Bbdim7 and C#dim7 use the same four keys.
- That even spacing is why Edim7 sounds tense, dramatic and can lead to several different chords.
vii°7 → i: Edim7 → Fm
Edim7 inversions on the keyboard
A seventh chord has four notes, so it has four positions. Each one is still Edim7.
Root position: E G Bb Db
1st inversion: G Bb Db E
2nd inversion: Bb Db E G
3rd inversion: Db E G Bb
A 5-minute Edim7 routine
- Start in root position: E, G, Bb, Db, four times, eyes on the symbol.
- Climb the four positions: E G Bb Db, then G Bb Db E, Bb Db E G and Db E G Bb, and back down.
- Loop Edim7 → Fm until the change into and out of Edim7 is clean.
- Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.
A few minutes every day on Edim7 beat one long session a week.
Edim7 fingering, both hands
| Hand | E | G | Bb | Db |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Too much stretch? Play E alone in the left hand and G Bb Db in the right.
A three-note Edim7
Drop the fifth and keep E G Db: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "Edim7".

What notes are in the E diminished 7th chord?
Edim7 has four notes: E, G, Bb, Db. Root, minor third, diminished fifth and diminished seventh (formula 1 b3 b5 bb7).
Can I play Edim7 with three notes?
Yes. Leave out the fifth and play E G Db: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like Edim7 and is easier for the left hand.
Where does Edim7 go?
Edim7 is the vii°7 chord of F minor: it pulls up one key, Edim7 → F / Fm. Every note is three keys above the one before, so Edim7, Gdim7, Bbdim7 and C#dim7 use the same four keys.
Can I practise Edim7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Edim7 counts in any inversion, as long as E, G, Bb, Db sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
