F Sharp Augmented Chord on Piano (F#aug)

F sharp augmented (F#aug) is spelled F# - A# - C##: root, major 3rd and augmented 5th. Its sound is floating, unresolved, so it rarely stays long before moving on. Here is where F#aug comes from, where it resolves and how to play it with both hands.

Where F#aug goes

  • F#aug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of D# minor.
  • Its thirds are equal, so F#aug, Bbaug and Daug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.
  • A common move is F# → F#aug → B: the raised fifth C## pushes up to D#.

Common questions

How do you play F#aug on the piano?

Press F#, A#, C## together: right hand 1-3-5 with the thumb on F#, left hand 5-3-1 with the little finger on F#.

What is the difference between F#aug and F#?

One note. F# has C# on top; F#aug moves it to C##. The new fifth is what gives F#aug its floating, unresolved sound.

Where does F#aug go?

F#aug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of D# minor. Its thirds are equal, so F#aug, Bbaug and Daug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.

Can I practise F#aug with a MIDI keyboard or microphone?

Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically and also hears an acoustic piano through the microphone. F#aug counts in any position, as long as F#, A#, C## sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.
