Land all four fingers at once. If E is quieter, the little finger is too flat.

The light version of F#7

F#7 F# A# E

Drop the fifth and keep F# A# E: root, third and seventh. Pianists use this shell voicing in the left hand, because those three notes already say "F#7".

Where F#7 goes

  • F#7 is the V7 chord of B major and of B minor: it pulls into B / Bm.
  • In a ii-V-I in B major it is the middle chord: C#m7 → F#7 → Bmaj7.
  • Between A# and E there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. C7 has the same two notes, so it can replace F#7 (tritone substitution).

ii-V-I: C#m7 → F#7 → Bmaj7 · F#

Learning F#7 step by step

  1. Start in root position: F#, A#, C#, E, four times, eyes on the symbol.
  2. Walk up through the inversions (A# C# E F#, C# E F# A#, E F# A# C#) without lifting the whole hand.
  3. Loop C#m7 → F#7 → Bmaj7 until the change into and out of F#7 is clean.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

A few minutes every day on F#7 beat one long session a week.

Common questions

What is the difference between F#7 and F#?

F#7 adds one note to the F# triad: E, the minor seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.

Can I play F#7 with three notes?

Yes. Leave out the fifth and play F# A# E: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like F#7 and is easier for the left hand.

Where does F#7 go?

F#7 is the V7 chord of B major and of B minor: it pulls into B / Bm. In a ii-V-I in B major it is the middle chord: C#m7 → F#7 → Bmaj7.

Can I practise F#7 with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. F#7 counts in any inversion, as long as F#, A#, C#, E sound together.
