Piano Games Online, on a Real Piano

Most piano games online let you click keys with a mouse. ChordRunner is a piano game you play on a real piano: plug in a MIDI keyboard or let the microphone hear your acoustic piano, and every chord you play moves your runner. It runs in the browser, so you can start in seconds, with nothing to install.

No account, no download. The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.

The best piano games online teach something

A good piano game should leave you a better player after ten minutes. Three things make that happen:

  1. It uses a real instrument: muscle memory only grows on real keys.
  2. It is never the same twice: random chords train recall; a fixed song trains one song.
  3. It adapts: harder chords arrive when you are ready, not before.

ChordRunner was designed around those three rules, from major and minor triads to 13th and altered chords, in all 12 keys. Want something specific? Try the piano chord game or the chord quiz.

Piano games online: what you need

An instrument

A USB MIDI keyboard or digital piano is the best match: it sends every note to the browser instantly and lets you play full chords with both hands. Any 25-key or bigger keyboard works. No keyboard yet? An acoustic piano works too, through the microphone of your laptop, tablet or phone.

A browser

Chrome and Edge read MIDI keyboards directly. On iPhone and iPad, play into the microphone. Nothing to install, no account needed to try the demo.

Ten minutes

A run lasts a few minutes. Play two or three in a row and stop while it is still fun: short, frequent sessions are how game practice turns into real skill. Your best runs show you how far you have come.

Which game first?

Total beginner: piano games for beginners. You know your triads: jump into 7th chords in the piano chord game. You like to compete: live multiplayer against players around the world.

How a run works

Your runner moves through a landscape. Chord blocks ride towards it, each with a symbol: C, Am, Fmaj7, G7. Play the chord on your piano before the block arrives and the runner jumps over it; miss it and the run gets harder. The chords come in random order, so you cannot learn a pattern: you have to know each chord. That is exactly the skill you need when a song, a lead sheet or a band calls a chord at you. As your hit rate rises, the game brings in new chord families and the pace picks up, so a run never feels too easy or impossible.
