Learn Music Theory Through Piano, One Exercise at a Time

The keyboard is the clearest place to learn music theory through piano: every note sits in a straight line, and every interval and chord looks the same in any key once you know the pattern. These five exercises turn the main ideas into shapes you can see and play.

Why the keyboard helps

On the piano a half step is always the next key and a major 3rd is always four keys up. The pattern of white and black keys makes keys and scales visible, so ideas that feel abstract on paper become shapes under your hand.

Five exercises

  • Interval walk: from C, play every interval up to the octave and name it.
  • Chord from a formula: build major (4 + 3 half steps) and minor (3 + 4) on all 12 notes.
  • Key family: play the seven chords of C major, then G major, saying I to vii°.
  • Function test: play I, IV, V, I and then I, V, IV, I and listen to which ending feels final.
  • Quality by ear: someone plays a triad, you say major, minor, augmented or diminished.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.

Ten minutes a day

Pick two exercises per day and rotate. Saying the names out loud while you play is the secret: it connects the word, the shape and the sound.

Let the game test you

ChordRunner covers several of these: chords from their names in all 12 keys, chords inside a chosen key, and ear training where you hear a chord and play it back. Use a MIDI keyboard, a piano near the microphone or the on-screen keyboard.

The levels in ChordRunner

  • Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
  • Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
  • Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
  • Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.

Common questions

Is piano the best instrument to learn music theory?

It is the clearest, because notes are laid out in a line and patterns look the same in every key. Any instrument works if you play every idea you learn.

How do I practice music theory on piano?

Play intervals from one note, build chords from formulas in all keys, play the chords of a key in order and test chord quality by ear.

Can I learn music theory with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. A MIDI keyboard connected to an app gives instant feedback on every interval and chord you play.

Which instruments work?

A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.

How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?

Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.

Is everything in the demo?
