Bbdim Bb Db Fb

Same chord, different bottom note

An inversion just reorders Bb, Db and Fb. Bottom note Bb: root position. Bottom note Db: 1st inversion. Bottom note Fb: 2nd inversion.

Tense and unstable: it wants to move to the next chord.

Connecting the inversions

Climbing the G-B-e strings: root position (fret 3) → 1st inversion (fret 6) → 2nd inversion (fret 11). Listen to the top note, Fb, Bb, Db: it is a little melody inside one chord.

One area of the neck, near fret 8, already holds four Bbdim shapes: G-B-e strings 6-5-6; D-G-B strings 8-6-5; A-D-G strings 7-8-6; E-A-D strings 9-7-8.

Twelve Bbdim shapes, string set by string set

Each row uses three neighbouring strings and climbs the neck from the lowest shape to the highest. Mute or skip the other strings.

Practise Bbdim triads in four steps

  1. Learn the three shapes on the top strings first, slowly, saying the bottom note each time.
  2. Climb the neck through the three shapes and come back down without stopping.
  3. Stay near fret 8 and find Bbdim on two different string sets.
  4. Last, switch between Bbdim and another triad in the same area of the neck.

Small daily sessions work best: shapes stick by repetition.
