These shapes keep the hand in one place: each chord uses the position nearest to the one before.
6 chord progressions in B flat minor
i-iv-v-i: Bbm – Ebm – Fm – Bbm
The basic minor progression: home, away, back home. (Bbm = Bb Db F · Ebm = Eb Gb Bb · Fm = F Ab C · Bbm = Bb Db F)
i-VI-III-VII: Bbm – Gb – Db – Ab
A big, epic minor loop heard in film music and rock. (Bbm = Bb Db F · Gb = Gb Bb Db · Db = Db F Ab · Ab = Ab C Eb)
i-iv-V-i: Bbm – Ebm – F – Bbm
Like the basic minor progression, but the major V pulls harder back home. (Bbm = Bb Db F · Ebm = Eb Gb Bb · F = F A C · Bbm = Bb Db F)
iiø-V-i: Cm7b5 – F7 – Bbm7
The minor version of the jazz cadence. (Cm7b5 = C Eb Gb Bb · F7 = F A C Eb · Bbm7 = Bb Db F Ab)
i-VII-VI-VII: Bbm – Ab – Gb – Ab
A rocking back-and-forth that never quite lands. (Bbm = Bb Db F · Ab = Ab C Eb · Gb = Gb Bb Db · Ab = Ab C Eb)
i-VI-iv-V: Bbm – Gb – Ebm – F
A dramatic loop with a strong pull at the end. (Bbm = Bb Db F · Gb = Gb Bb Db · Ebm = Eb Gb Bb · F = F A C)
How to practise a progression
- Count four beats per chord and name it out loud.
- Loop the progression until you no longer look at your hands.
- Go faster only once each change sounds clean.
Turn a progression into a game
In ChordRunner you type a progression, for example Bbm – Ebm – Fm – Bbm, and the game loops it until you own it (advanced feature in ChordRunner Premium). MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
