How to Practice Chord Changes and Switch Faster

How to practice chord changes: pick two chords, switch between them slowly until the move is clean, then speed up and add a third. Keep the fingers that stay, move only the ones that must. On piano or guitar, ChordRunner gives you the next chord before you are ready, the best way to make changes fast.

How to practice chord changes in 4 steps

  1. Two chords only. For example C and G. Play one, stop, play the other.
  2. Slow and clean. All notes ring at once? Then you may go a bit faster.
  3. The one-minute test. Count how many clean changes you make in 60 seconds. Write it down and beat it tomorrow.
  4. Add a third chord, then play the three in a random order.

Ten minutes a day is enough. Hands learn a change by repeating it, not by thinking about it.

Chord changes on piano: stay close

Do not jump to every chord in its basic shape. Pick the shape that is nearest: most fingers stay where they are.

C C E G
F/C C F A
G/B B D G

C → F → G with the hand still: the thumb moves one key at most, the other fingers one or two. These shapes are called inversions; see the C major inversions.

Chord changes on guitar: anchor fingers

  • Keep what is shared. From C to Am only one finger moves; leave the other two on their strings.
  • Lift little, land together. Fingers hover just above the strings and land as one shape.
  • Look ahead. Think of the next chord while the current one is still ringing.
  • Strum through. Keep the strumming hand moving even if the change is late; the left hand catches up.

Chord changes as a game

The next chord is already coming towards your runner, so you learn to change on time.

Practice mode first

No lives and no penalties; the notes of the chord are shown while you play.

Then the speed run

It gets faster every minute and adds a new key every 5 chords.

Any shape counts

Basic shape or the nearest inversion: if the notes are right, the change counts.

MIDI keyboard or microphone

A USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically; a piano or guitar works through the microphone.

Common questions

How long does it take to learn chord changes?

Most players get a clean change between two chords in a few days of short daily practice. Count your clean changes in one minute: when the number stops growing, add a new pair.

How do I change chords faster on guitar?

Keep the fingers the two chords share on the strings, lift the others only a little and land them together. From C to Am only one finger moves.

How do I change chords faster on piano?

Use the nearest shape of the next chord instead of jumping to its basic shape. C to F/C to G/B keeps the hand almost still.

Can a game help with chord changes?

Yes. In ChordRunner the next chord is already coming, so you change on time. It hears a USB MIDI keyboard or a piano or guitar through the microphone.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
