E Minor Chord on Guitar (Em)
The E minor chord on guitar (Em) uses the notes E, G, B. It is an open chord: some strings ring without fingers. Strum all six strings. Below: the diagram, which finger goes where, a second shape and the chords that go with it.

Em guitar chord: shape and fingers
Where each finger goes
- Middle: 5th string (A), fret 2
- Ring: 4th string (D), fret 2
Strings to play
022000: × = do not play, 0 = open string.
The notes inside Em, string by string
| 6th string (low E) | open: E |
|---|---|
| 5th string (A) | fret 2: B |
| 4th string (D) | fret 2: E |
| 3rd string (G) | open: G |
| 2nd string (B) | open: B |
| 1st string (high E) | open: E |
From Em to E only one thing changes: 3rd string (G): open → fret 1.
A short Em routine
- Place the fingers one at a time, then strum and listen to each string.
- Take the hand off and put the whole shape back at once, ten times in a row.
- Change from Em to G and back for a minute; then add Am.
Em higher up the neck
Same chord, different place: handy when the next chord is up the neck too.
If Em does not sound clean
- Buzzing means the finger is too far from the fret: slide it closer.
- Pick the strings one by one: the silent one shows which finger to lift a little.
- A little pain in the first days is normal; it goes away as the fingertips harden.
Practise Em with the microphone
Strum Em near the microphone when it appears and the game hears it. On screen you see the symbol, not the diagram: that is how the shape sticks. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
Play the demoCommon questions
Is Em easy on guitar?
Yes, it is one of the open chords beginners learn first. Start slowly, check that every string rings, then practise switching to G.
Which fingers do I use for Em?
Middle finger: 5th string (A), fret 2, ring finger: 4th string (D), fret 2.
Can I practise Em with the microphone?
Yes. ChordRunner hears an acoustic or electric guitar through the microphone, and also a USB MIDI keyboard. It shows the chord symbol Em, not the diagram, and checks the notes you strum.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
