Em G B E

Three orders of the same three notes

Root position puts E at the bottom, 1st inversion puts G at the bottom, 2nd inversion puts B at the bottom. It is still Em; what changes is the lowest and the highest note you hear.

Darker than major: the middle note of the major shape moves down one fret.

Em on each string set

Each row uses three neighbouring strings and climbs the neck from the lowest shape to the highest. Mute or skip the other strings.

How to move between the shapes

Climbing the G-B-e strings: 1st inversion (fret 0) → 2nd inversion (fret 5) → root position (fret 9). Listen to the top note, E, G, B: it is a little melody inside one chord.

One area of the neck, near fret 7, already holds four Em shapes: G-B-e strings 4-5-3; D-G-B strings 5-4-5; A-D-G strings 7-5-4; E-A-D strings 7-7-5.

Frets from the low E string to the high E string; x = string not played.

Practise Em triads in four steps

  1. Start with the G-B-e strings only: three shapes, one minute each.
  2. Connect the shapes up and down the G-B-e strings, four strums per shape.
  3. Pick one fret area, around fret 7, and find Em on every string set without moving your hand far.
  4. Then test yourself: random chord names, find the closest Em shape each time.

Learn one string set per week and in a month the whole neck is yours.

Test Em with your guitar

The game shows chord symbols, not diagrams, so you choose the shape: any inversion of Em counts, as long as the microphone hears the right notes.

Common questions

What are the inversions of Em on guitar?

Root position (E at the bottom), 1st inversion (G at the bottom) and 2nd inversion (B at the bottom). On the top three strings: 1st inversion 0-0-0; 2nd inversion 4-5-3; Root position 9-8-7.

Why learn triad inversions on guitar?

They let you play Em in any area of the neck with three fingers, so chord changes stay close and the top note can follow a melody.

What does a Em triad sound like?

Darker than major: the middle note of the major shape moves down one fret.

Can I practise Em with a game that listens to my guitar?

Yes. ChordRunner hears your guitar through the microphone and checks the chord in any shape or inversion. A USB MIDI keyboard works too.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
