The F diminished guitar chord, finger by finger
Finger by finger
- Middle: 6th string (low E), fret 1
- Little: 4th string (D), fret 3
- Ring: 3rd string (G), fret 1
Strings to play
1x310x: × = do not play, 0 = open string.
Where Fdim is used
Fdim wants to move up one fret: play Fdim, then F# or F#m, and it resolves.
Fdim string by string
| 6th string (low E) | fret 1: F |
|---|---|
| 4th string (D) | fret 3: F |
| 3rd string (G) | fret 1: Ab |
| 2nd string (B) | open: Cb |
Slide this shape along the neck: fret 2 = F#dim, fret 3 = Gdim, fret 4 = Abdim, fret 5 = Adim.
Learning Fdim step by step
- Place the fingers one at a time, then strum and listen to each string.
- Take the hand off and put the whole shape back at once, ten times in a row.
- Change from Fdim to F and back for a minute; then add Bb.
Make Fdim automatic
Fdim turns up between other chords in ChordRunner; strum it on time and the runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.

Is Fdim easy on guitar?
Yes, it is one of the open chords beginners learn first. Start slowly, check that every string rings, then practise switching to F.
Which fingers do I use for Fdim?
Middle finger: 6th string (low E), fret 1, little finger: 4th string (D), fret 3, ring finger: 3rd string (G), fret 1.
Can I practise Fdim with a microphone or MIDI keyboard?
Both work in ChordRunner. The microphone hears an acoustic or electric guitar; a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically. Either way F, Ab, Cb must sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
