F Sharp Minor Chord on Guitar (F#m)
The F sharp minor chord on guitar (F#m) uses the notes F#, A, C#. It is a barre chord: the index finger presses all the strings at fret 2. Strum all six strings. Below: the diagram, which finger goes where, a second shape and the chords that go with it.

Where each finger goes
- Index: across the strings (barre), fret 2
- Ring: 5th string (A), fret 4
- Little: 4th string (D), fret 4
Which strings to strum
244222: × = do not play, 0 = open string.
If F#m does not sound clean
- For a clean F#m, press firmly but close to the metal fret wire.
- A string is muted? Arch your fingers so they touch only their own string.
- A little pain in the first days is normal; it goes away as the fingertips harden.
The notes inside F#m, string by string
| 6th string (low E) | fret 2: F# |
|---|---|
| 5th string (A) | fret 4: C# |
| 4th string (D) | fret 4: F# |
| 3rd string (G) | fret 2: A |
| 2nd string (B) | fret 2: C# |
| 1st string (high E) | fret 2: F# |
From F#m to F# only one thing changes: 3rd string (G): fret 2 → fret 3.
Practise F#m in three steps
- Place the fingers one at a time, then strum and listen to each string.
- Lift the hand, then land all fingers together. Repeat ten times.
- Switch between F#m and A for one minute, then try Bm.
Practise F#m with the microphone
ChordRunner listens to your guitar: when F#m appears, strum it and your runner jumps. The game shows the chord symbol only, so you learn to find the shape yourself. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.

What notes are in the F#m guitar chord?
F sharp minor has three notes: F#, A, C#. On the guitar some of them are doubled on different strings, so all six (or five) strings sound like one chord.
Which fingers do I use for F#m?
Index finger: across the strings (barre), fret 2, ring finger: 5th string (A), fret 4, little finger: 4th string (D), fret 4.
Can I practise F#m with the microphone?
Yes. ChordRunner hears an acoustic or electric guitar through the microphone, and also a USB MIDI keyboard. It shows the chord symbol F#m, not the diagram, and checks the notes you strum.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
