F#m A C# F#

Twelve F#m shapes, string set by string set

Start with the top three strings: the shapes are small and the top note is clear. Then move the same idea to the lower sets.

Same chord, different bottom note

An inversion just reorders F#, A and C#. Bottom note F#: root position. Bottom note A: 1st inversion. Bottom note C#: 2nd inversion.

Darker than major: the middle note of the major shape moves down one fret.

A short F#m triad routine

  1. Learn the three shapes on the top strings first, slowly, saying the bottom note each time.
  2. Connect the shapes up and down the G-B-e strings, four strums per shape.
  3. Stay near fret 9 and find F#m on two different string sets.
  4. Then test yourself: random chord names, find the closest F#m shape each time.

Learn one string set per week and in a month the whole neck is yours.

Connecting the inversions

Walk up the G-B-e strings through 1st inversion (fret 2) → 2nd inversion (fret 7) → root position (fret 11), then back down. The top notes F#, A, C# change while the chord stays F#m.

Around fret 9, without moving the hand: G-B-e strings 6-7-5; D-G-B strings 7-6-7; A-D-G strings 9-7-6; E-A-D strings 9-9-7.

Train chord changes on your guitar

ChordRunner listens to your guitar through the microphone: a chord name appears, you play it in any shape, and the game hears if the notes are right. A MIDI keyboard works too.

Common questions

How do you play F#m triads on the top strings?

On the G, B and high E strings: 1st inversion 2-2-2; 2nd inversion 6-7-5; Root position 11-10-9. Play only those three strings.

Why learn triad inversions on guitar?

They let you play F#m in any area of the neck with three fingers, so chord changes stay close and the top note can follow a melody.

What does a F#m triad sound like?

Darker than major: the middle note of the major shape moves down one fret.

Can I practise F#m with a game that listens to my guitar?

Yes. ChordRunner hears your guitar through the microphone and checks the chord in any shape or inversion. A USB MIDI keyboard works too.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
