Gdim Bb Db G

Same chord, different bottom note

The notes never change, only their order. With Bb or Db at the bottom, Gdim sounds lighter and lets the melody note on top change.

Tense and unstable: it wants to move to the next chord.

Twelve Gdim shapes, string set by string set

Start with the top three strings: the shapes are small and the top note is clear. Then move the same idea to the lower sets.

From one shape to the next

Walk up the G-B-e strings through 1st inversion (fret 3) → 2nd inversion (fret 8) → root position (fret 12), then back down. The top notes G, Bb, Db change while the chord stays Gdim.

One area of the neck, near fret 10, already holds four Gdim shapes: G-B-e strings 6-8-6; D-G-B strings 8-6-8; A-D-G strings 10-8-6; E-A-D strings 9-10-8.

A short Gdim triad routine

  1. Start with the G-B-e strings only: three shapes, one minute each.
  2. Climb the neck through the three shapes and come back down without stopping.
  3. Pick one fret area, around fret 10, and find Gdim on every string set without moving your hand far.
  4. Then test yourself: random chord names, find the closest Gdim shape each time.

Small daily sessions work best: shapes stick by repetition.

Train chord changes on your guitar

The game shows chord symbols, not diagrams, so you choose the shape: any inversion of Gdim counts, as long as the microphone hears the right notes.

Common questions

What are the inversions of Gdim on guitar?

Root position (G at the bottom), 1st inversion (Bb at the bottom) and 2nd inversion (Db at the bottom). On the top three strings: 1st inversion 3-2-3; 2nd inversion 6-8-6; Root position 12-11-9.

Which Gdim triad shape is the easiest?

Usually the lowest one on the top strings, 3-2-3, because it sits near the nut.

What does a Gdim triad sound like?

Tense and unstable: it wants to move to the next chord.

Can I practise Gdim with a game that listens to my guitar?

Yes. ChordRunner hears your guitar through the microphone and checks the chord in any shape or inversion. A USB MIDI keyboard works too.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
