How Long Does It Take to Learn Guitar Theory?

How long to learn guitar theory depends on how much theory you need. The part that helps you play songs and write chord progressions takes about three months at a few minutes a day. Reading, harmony and jazz theory can grow for years, but you do not need them to start using it.

Three levels, three timelines

  • About 4 weeks: notes on the 6th and 5th strings, half and whole steps, how a major chord differs from a minor one.
  • About 3 months: the major scale, chords in a key (I, IV, V, vi), Roman numerals, and why G, C and D sound good together.
  • A year and more: 7th chords and extensions, modes, secondary dominants and reading on the staff.

What matters most for guitarists

Knowing the notes on the two lowest strings unlocks every barre chord and power chord. Knowing the chords in a key lets you guess the next chord in a song. Those two topics give more than any long list of scales.

Why it can feel slow

Theory learned only on paper fades fast. Each idea sticks when you play it: name the root of every chord you play, say the Roman numeral of each chord in a progression, and the theory becomes something your hands know.

Practise theory as a game

ChordRunner can keep every chord inside one key and scale, so you hear and play the I, IV, V and vi of G major until they feel like a family. It listens through the microphone, so the theory goes straight from the screen to your guitar.

The levels in ChordRunner

  • Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
  • Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
  • Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
  • Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.

Common questions

How long does it take to learn guitar theory?

About three months for the practical core (notes on the neck, the major scale, chords in a key) with a few minutes a day. Deeper theory keeps growing for years.

Is guitar theory hard?

The useful core is not. It is a few patterns repeated in every key, and the guitar makes them visible because shapes move along the neck.

Do I need theory to play guitar?

No, but it speeds everything up: learning songs, finding chords by ear and changing key become much easier.

Which instruments work?

A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.

How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?

Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.

Is everything in the demo?
