How to Learn Piano With a MIDI Controller

You can learn piano with a MIDI controller on your desk and a computer or tablet. The controller sends every note you play, so software can check it instantly. That instant feedback is the big advantage over learning alone on an acoustic piano.

  • Digital or acoustic piano
  • Guitar
  • Computer, phone or tablet

How many keys you need

  • 25 keys: one hand only, fine for single notes and simple chords.
  • 49 keys: two hands, chords plus a bass note. The best size to start.
  • 61 keys: room for wider two-hand voicings.
  • 88 keys: only needed for classical repertoire.

Setup in three steps

  • Plug the controller into the computer or tablet by USB.
  • Open a MIDI-ready app or game in Chrome or Edge.
  • Press a key: if the screen reacts, you are ready. No driver is needed for most class-compliant controllers.

What to practise first

Start with single notes in different octaves, then major and minor triads in the right hand, then a bass note in the left. Short daily sessions with instant feedback build accuracy faster than long sessions without it.

The limits of light keys

Most controllers have light, unweighted keys. They are great for chords and reading, but if you plan to play classical piano, practise on weighted keys sometimes so your fingers build strength. ChordRunner detects a USB controller automatically and checks every note, and the same game also works with a real piano through the microphone.

The levels in ChordRunner

  • Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
  • Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
  • Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
  • Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.

Common questions

Can you learn piano with a MIDI controller?

Yes. You can learn notes, chords, reading and rhythm, with every note checked by software. For classical technique, add some practice on weighted keys.

How many keys do I need to learn piano?

49 keys is the best starting size for two-hand chords. 61 gives more room; 88 is only needed for classical pieces.

Does a MIDI controller need drivers?

Most current controllers are class compliant and work over USB without drivers in Chrome or Edge.

Which instruments work?

A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.

How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?

Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.

Is everything in the demo?
