How to Learn Piano Without Reading Music
Yes, you can learn piano without reading music. Many pop, rock and worship players never read a staff: they read chord symbols like C, Am and F and use their ear. The trick is to learn chords and rhythm first, and add reading later if your goals need it.

- Digital or acoustic piano
- Guitar
- Computer, phone or tablet
What you can play without reading
- Accompaniment for songs from a chord chart or lyrics with chords.
- Your own songs and chord progressions.
- Playing in a band, where chord charts are the norm.
- Simple melodies learned by ear.
Where it stops
Classical pieces, exams and most piano methods are written on the staff. Playing someone else’s exact arrangement is also much easier if you read. Reading is not needed to start, but it opens a second library of music.
How to Learn Piano Without Reading Music
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoA plan built on chords
- Weeks 1 to 4: the major and minor triads in white keys, right hand.
- Weeks 5 to 8: left hand bass note under each chord, then simple progressions.
- After that: inversions, 7th chords and playing along to recordings by ear.
Practise chords from their names
ChordRunner is built around chord symbols, the way non-readers play: a chord name appears and you play it on a MIDI keyboard or a piano near the microphone. When you want to start reading, it also has sight reading on a real staff, so you can add the second skill without changing tool.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
Can you learn piano without reading music?
Yes. With chord symbols and your ear you can accompany songs, play in a band and write your own music. Reading becomes useful for classical pieces and exact arrangements.
Is it bad to learn piano without reading music?
No. It is a different path. Many players read chords only; some add sheet music later when their goals change.
What should I learn first if I do not read music?
The major and minor chords in every key, then a bass note in the left hand, then common progressions like I-V-vi-IV.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
Is everything in the demo?
