Piano Chords That Go Together, Key by Key
Piano chords that go together come from the same key. In C major, C, F and G are the three main chords, and adding Am gives the four most common piano chords of all. Learn those sets in a few keys and you can play the harmony of a huge number of songs.

Three and four chord sets
- C major: C F G, plus Am.
- G major: G C D, plus Em.
- D major: D G A, plus Bm.
- F major: F Bb C, plus Dm.
- A minor: Am Dm E, plus F.
Why they sound good together
The three main chords (I, IV, V) together contain every note of the major scale, and they share notes in pairs: C and F share C, C and G share G. That overlap lets the ear follow the change without a jolt.
Piano Chords That Go Together, Key by Key
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps.
Play the demoWays to order them
- C G Am F: the most common pop loop.
- C F G C: the classic ending.
- Am F C G: the same chords, a sadder start.
- C Am F G: the 50s style loop.
Make them automatic
ChordRunner can keep every chord inside the key you choose, so a C major round sends only C, Dm, Em, F, G and Am, in random order, until the family is under your fingers. Play on a MIDI keyboard or a piano near the microphone, any inversion counts.
The levels in ChordRunner
- Beginner: major, minor, augmented and diminished chords.
- Intermediate: adds sus2 and sus4.
- Advanced: adds 6th, 7th and 9th chords.
- Pro: adds 11th, 13th and altered chords; an adaptive mode adds the next family when you are ready.
Common questions
What 3 piano chords go together?
The I, IV and V of a key: C, F and G in C major, or G, C and D in G major.
What are the 4 most common piano chords?
In C major: C, G, Am and F. In other keys, the I, V, vi and IV chords of that key.
How do I know if chords go together?
Check whether they belong to the same key, or share notes. Chords from one key almost always sound good together.
Which instruments work?
A USB MIDI keyboard, detected automatically, or a piano or guitar through the microphone. Everything runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer, tablet or phone.
How is this different from apps where you tap the screen?
Tapping trains your eyes and fingers on glass. Here you press real keys or fret real strings, and the game hears the actual notes, so what you practise is exactly what you will play on your instrument.
Is everything in the demo?
The demo has limited content. Advanced features are in ChordRunner Premium.
