How to play Adim7 on the piano
| Hand | A | C | Eb | Gb |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Right hand | 1 (thumb) | 2 | 3 | 5 (little) |
| Left hand | 5 (little) | 3 | 2 | 1 (thumb) |
Play Adim7 broken first, A, C, Eb, Gb one by one, then together: a wrong key stands out.
Adim7 without the fifth
Root, third, seventh: A C Gb. It is the shape to learn first, and it moves smoothly to the next chord.
A 5-minute Adim7 routine
- Start in root position: A, C, Eb, Gb, four times, eyes on the symbol.
- Walk up through the inversions (C Eb Gb A, Eb Gb A C, Gb A C Eb) without lifting the whole hand.
- Loop Adim7 → Bbm until the change into and out of Adim7 is clean.
- Then mix it with chords you already know, in an order you do not choose: that is where it sticks.
Short daily rounds fix Adim7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.

Four ways to play Adim7
A seventh chord has four notes, so it has four positions. Each one is still Adim7.
Root position: A C Eb Gb
1st inversion: C Eb Gb A
2nd inversion: Eb Gb A C
3rd inversion: Gb A C Eb
What Adim7 does in music
- Adim7 is the vii°7 chord of Bb minor: it pulls up one key, Adim7 → Bb / Bbm.
- Every note is three keys above the one before, so Adim7, Cdim7, Ebdim7 and F#dim7 use the same four keys.
- That even spacing is why Adim7 sounds tense, dramatic and can lead to several different chords.
vii°7 → i: Adim7 → Bbm

What notes are in the A diminished 7th chord?
Adim7 has four notes: A, C, Eb, Gb. Root, minor third, diminished fifth and diminished seventh (formula 1 b3 b5 bb7).
Can I play Adim7 with three notes?
Yes. Leave out the fifth and play A C Gb: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like Adim7 and is easier for the left hand.
Where does Adim7 go?
Adim7 is the vii°7 chord of Bb minor: it pulls up one key, Adim7 → Bb / Bbm. Every note is three keys above the one before, so Adim7, Cdim7, Ebdim7 and F#dim7 use the same four keys.
Can I practise Adim7 with a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Adim7 counts in any inversion, as long as A, C, Eb, Gb sound together.
Your instrument is the controller.
ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
