A Minor 7th Chord on Piano (Am7)

A minor 7th (Am7) is spelled A - C - E - G. It sounds like Am with an extra G, the note that gives it its soft, warm colour. Learn the shape and the inversions, then practise Am7 by playing.

Left hand5 (little)321 (thumb)

Play Am7 broken first, A, C, E, G one by one, then together: a wrong key stands out.

Am7 without the fifth

Am7 A C G

Root, third, seventh: A C G. It is the shape to learn first, and it moves smoothly to the next chord.

Learning Am7 step by step

  1. Start in root position: A, C, E, G, four times, eyes on the symbol.
  2. Walk up through the inversions (C E G A, E G A C, G A C E) without lifting the whole hand.
  3. Loop Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7 until the change into and out of Am7 is clean.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

A few minutes every day on Am7 beat one long session a week.

What Am7 does in music

  • Am7 is the ii chord of G major, the iii of F major and the vi of C major.
  • As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7.
  • Am7 has the same notes as C6 (C E G A): with A in the bass it is Am7, with C in the bass it is C6.

ii-V-I: Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7 · Am

Common questions

What is the difference between Am7 and Am?

Am7 adds one note to the Am triad: G, the minor seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.

Can I play Am7 with three notes?

Yes. Leave out the fifth and play A C G: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like Am7 and is easier for the left hand.

Where does Am7 go?

Am7 is the ii chord of G major, the iii of F major and the vi of C major. As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7.

Can I practise Am7 with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Am7 counts in any inversion, as long as A, C, E, G sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
