B Flat Augmented Chord on Piano (Bbaug)

To play Bbaug on the piano, press Bb, D, F# together. Start from Bb and move the fifth up a semitone: that one key turns it into Bbaug. Here is where Bbaug comes from, where it resolves and how to play it with both hands.

Bbaug in keys and progressions

  • Bbaug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of G minor.
  • Its thirds are equal, so Bbaug, Daug and F#aug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.
  • A common move is Bb → Bbaug → Eb: the raised fifth F# pushes up to G.

Common questions

What notes are in the B flat augmented chord?

Bbaug has three notes: Bb, D, F#. Root, major 3rd and augmented 5th (formula 1 3 #5).

What is the difference between Bbaug and Bb?

One note. Bb has F on top; Bbaug moves it to F#. The new fifth is what gives Bbaug its floating, unresolved sound.

Where does Bbaug go?

Bbaug is the III+ chord in the harmonic minor scale of G minor. Its thirds are equal, so Bbaug, Daug and F#aug use the same three keys: the root is whichever note you treat as home.

Can I practise Bbaug with a MIDI keyboard or microphone?

Yes. ChordRunner detects a USB MIDI keyboard automatically and also hears an acoustic piano through the microphone. Bbaug counts in any position, as long as Bb, D, F# sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
