Too much stretch? Play Bb alone in the left hand and D F Ab in the right.

Bb7 without the fifth

Bb7 Bb D Ab

The fifth (F) adds little colour. Bb D Ab is enough to sound like Bb7 and is far easier to reach.

How to practise Bb7

  1. Start in root position: Bb, D, F, Ab, four times, eyes on the symbol.
  2. Climb the four positions: Bb D F Ab, then D F Ab Bb, F Ab Bb D and Ab Bb D F, and back down.
  3. Loop Fm7 → Bb7 → Ebmaj7 until the change into and out of Bb7 is clean.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

A few minutes every day on Bb7 beat one long session a week.

Bb7 in keys and progressions

  • Bb7 is the V7 chord of Eb major and of Eb minor: it pulls into Eb / Ebm.
  • In a ii-V-I in Eb major it is the middle chord: Fm7 → Bb7 → Ebmaj7.
  • Between D and Ab there is a tritone, the interval that creates the pull. E7 has the same two notes, so it can replace Bb7 (tritone substitution).

ii-V-I: Fm7 → Bb7 → Ebmaj7 · Bb

Common questions

What is the difference between Bb7 and Bb?

Bb7 adds one note to the Bb triad: Ab, the minor seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.

Can I play Bb7 with three notes?

Yes. Leave out the fifth and play Bb D Ab: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like Bb7 and is easier for the left hand.

Where does Bb7 go?

Bb7 is the V7 chord of Eb major and of Eb minor: it pulls into Eb / Ebm. In a ii-V-I in Eb major it is the middle chord: Fm7 → Bb7 → Ebmaj7.

Can I practise Bb7 with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. Bb7 counts in any inversion, as long as Bb, D, F, Ab sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.

ChordRunner is a browser game that teaches piano and guitar chords: a chord appears on screen, you play it on a real instrument, and your runner jumps. MIDI keyboard or microphone, both work.
