Playing Bm7 with each hand

HandBDF#A
Right hand1 (thumb)235 (little)
Left hand5 (little)321 (thumb)

Too much stretch? Play B alone in the left hand and D F# A in the right.

The light version of Bm7

Bm7 B D A

The fifth (F#) adds little colour. B D A is enough to sound like Bm7 and is far easier to reach.

Bm7 in keys and progressions

  • Bm7 is the ii chord of A major, the iii of G major and the vi of D major.
  • As ii in a ii-V-I it starts the most common jazz cadence: Bm7 → E7 → Amaj7.
  • Bm7 has the same notes as D6 (D F# A B): with B in the bass it is Bm7, with D in the bass it is D6.

ii-V-I: Bm7 → E7 → Amaj7 · Bm

How to practise Bm7

  1. Play B, D, F#, A slowly in root position and say "Bm7" each time.
  2. Walk up through the inversions (D F# A B, F# A B D, A B D F#) without lifting the whole hand.
  3. Loop Bm7 → E7 → Amaj7 until the change into and out of Bm7 is clean.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

Short daily rounds fix Bm7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.
