Play C#maj7 broken first, C#, E#, G#, B# one by one, then together: a wrong key stands out.

The light version of C#maj7

C#maj7 C# E# B#

The fifth (G#) adds little colour. C# E# B# is enough to sound like C#maj7 and is far easier to reach.

C#maj7 in keys and progressions

  • C#maj7 is the Imaj7 of C# major and the IVmaj7 of Ab major (as Dbmaj7).
  • It is where a ii-V-I in C# major lands: D#m7 → G#7 → C#maj7.
  • Inside C#maj7 sits E#m (E# G# B#): play E#m over C# in the bass and you get C#maj7.

How to practise C#maj7

  1. Start in root position: C#, E#, G#, B#, four times, eyes on the symbol.
  2. Walk up through the inversions (E# G# B# C#, G# B# C# E#, B# C# E# G#) without lifting the whole hand.
  3. Loop D#m7 → G#7 → C#maj7 until the change into and out of C#maj7 is clean.
  4. Finally meet it in random order between other chords, with a check on every note.

Short daily rounds fix C#maj7 in memory faster than one long practice a week.

Common questions

What is the difference between C#maj7 and C#?

C#maj7 adds one note to the C# triad: B#, the major seventh. That fourth note is what makes it a seventh chord.

Can I play C#maj7 with three notes?

Yes. Leave out the fifth and play C# E# B#: root, third and seventh. It still sounds like C#maj7 and is easier for the left hand.

Where does C#maj7 go?

C#maj7 is the Imaj7 of C# major and the IVmaj7 of Ab major (as Dbmaj7). It is where a ii-V-I in C# major lands: D#m7 → G#7 → C#maj7.

Can I practise C#maj7 with a MIDI keyboard?

Yes. In ChordRunner a USB MIDI keyboard is detected automatically, and an acoustic piano works through the microphone. C#maj7 counts in any inversion, as long as C#, E#, G#, B# sound together.

Your instrument is the controller.
